Meerut is a city in Uttar Pradesh and the capital of Meerut district. It is located on the banks of River Yamuna and it has an average elevation of 199 meters (656 feet). It was founded during the Mughal Empire by Mirza Ghazi Beg, who named it after himself. The city was previously known as Medapur but later changed its name to Meerut because its original name sounded like "Medapuria".
