The town was originally known as Sangli before being renamed after Krishnaji Bhonsle, who was born here in 1814 CE. In his youth, he travelled extensively throughout India and became one of the most prominent figures during British rule over India’s North Eastern regions from 1817 – 1947 CE (1905 - 1947).
Krishnaji Bhonsle rose through the ranks of politics by becoming President/Prime Minister three times between 1882-1885 CE; 1888-1889 CE; 1909-1912 CE respectively during British Rule over India’s North Eastern regions from 1905 - 1947 CE (1905 - 1947).
