Formerly known as ‘Sukhdev Nagar’ it has been renamed after Maharaja Hari Singh who ruled over this region till 1936 when he acceded to India.

Udhampur is known for its scenic beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture that reflects its Royalty roots. It has been declared as a heritage city by the Ministry Of Tourism & Culture since 2011 & also become one of those places selected under the ‘Heritage City Development Project’ funded by the World Bank & Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The city has many temples dedicated to Lord Krishna which attract thousands of pilgrims every year during the Shivratri festival (Oct/Nov).

This day marks the creation of Khalsa Panth (Sikh Community) by Guru Gobind Singh on April 17th 1699 at Anandpur Sahib.

This day has been celebrated for over 300 years as it commemorates martyrdom of 10 Sikhs including Baba Deep Singh who sacrificed his life for protecting his community from Mughals who were trying to erase Sikh identity from India. The martyrdom happened during Baisakhi in 1699 when Guru Gobind Singh gave robe to Arjun Das who then killed himself along with other nine Sikhs including Banda Singh
