The temple at Khimsar has been built over a cave that was used by Lord Shiva to meditate before he was born as Parvati’s husband who would later become known as Nandi (Lord of Hosts).
The sandstone carving that depicts this story is considered to be one of its most important artifacts from ancient times because it shows how much reverence people had for their own deity back then.
Every year it sees thousands of pilgrims come to bathe in the river, as well as offer prayers and perform rituals dedicated to Lord Shiva. The festival is held over four days and continues till 6th tithi on the lunar calendar (October 5–8).
The bathing ceremony starts with a religious service at 10 am on Monday morning. People who want to take part in this event must be dressed up nicely with clean cloths or clothes so that they don't disturb other bathers or contaminate them with their dirtiness.
