The name "Durg" means "fearless" or "brave". The festival has its roots from Goddess Parvati who was married to Lord Shiva but later became an independent goddess.
The story goes that Parvati wanted to marry Shiva but he refused because she had many husbands before him (the creator). So she decided to become an independent deity herself and thus began her own religion called 'Shaktism'. In this religion there are two main sects: one being Vaishnavism which believes in lord Vishnu as its ultimate form while others follow his other forms such as Narayan (Vishnu), Kalki (Vishnu), Rama/Hanuman etc..
