The Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) is a coal mining company located in Neyveli, Tamil Nadu. It has been operating since 1958 and has a history of over 50 years. This company was founded by the Government of India as an alternative source of energy during World War II when it became very difficult to import coal from abroad due to war conditions and rationing restrictions on imports. 

The NLC currently produces around 20 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) or 2% of India’s total production capacity at present. The plant also supplies about 5% of India’s domestic requirement for power generation through its thermal power station which has an installed capacity of 4 x 1000 MW units with another unit coming up soon after completion later this year
