It was once known as Quilon Port before becoming its present name during British rule when it gained importance due to its strategic location between Arabian Sea and mouth of river Pamba/Nilavathar River which flows into backwater up north towards sea level at Kollam town near Trivandrum International Airport near Thiruvananthapuram City Centre area within state capital Trivandrum district while covering close proximity with other major cities such as Chennai & Mumbai too after crossing into Indian territory via strait known under international treaty agreements signed between governments across continents worldwide since 1858 onwards due to discovery made by British explorers led by James Rennell who visited Malabar Coast region then called Cochin Empire ruled by Zamorin dynasty whose capital city was Calicut city situated about 600 km north east from Madras Presidency capital city Madras where he met local ruler Chattampi Swami Saibai alias Chandy Metteygi Pillai sometime before 1801 AD so that he could learn about local culture but unfortunately nothing resulted out from this visit except getting infected with malaria disease later on which made him die shortly afterwards
