Matheran is a popular tourist destination in Maharashtra. It's known for its lush forests and beautiful landscapes, made even more stunning by the Western Ghats that surround it. Matheran is also home to some of India's most beautiful lakes and waterfalls as well as several Matheran Temples and pilgrimage sites and churches dedicated to saints who lived here centuries ago. The town itself has grown considerably over the years but still retains much of its charm thanks to its idyllic atmosphere and friendly people who live there year round instead of just during peak season like many other places do!

Explore the Matheran Hill Railway

The Matheran Hill Railway is a heritage train that takes you through the picturesque Western Ghats. This train was built in 1923 and has been running continuously since then. It has been declared as a national monument by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

The journey starts from Lonavala Station, which is located on the Pune-Mumbai Road at Pune-Nashik Highway near Lonavala National Park. There are two trains that operate daily: one at 10 am and another at 2 pm with tickets costing Rs 150 per person for adults and Rs 100 for children below 12 years old.

Trek to One Tree Hill

One Tree Hill is the highest point in Matheran and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. The trek to the hill starts from Panchavati, which is located on the outskirts of Matheran. It takes about 2 hours to reach the top by foot or jeep, depending on how fast you go. Once there, enjoy a refreshing drink before continuing towards Khandala village where you will find some good restaurants and hotels for accommodation.

Visit Charlotte Lake

  • Visit Charlotte Lake: This serene lake is a popular spot for boating and picnics, and you can also take a walk around its perimeter to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
  • Visit Fort William: Matheran has been known as an important military base during British rule in India. It was here that William marched into Thanegaon after defeating Porus in 1803 A.D., thus winning back Bengal from Maratha invaders who had seized it during war with France (1795-1801).

Go on a Horse Ride

If you have a craving for adventure, horse riding is the perfect activity to take on while in Matheran. It's an exciting way to explore the town and its surroundings, especially if you're looking for something different from your typical sightseeing tour.

It is located at an elevation of about 100 meters, which makes it a perfect place to explore because you can see both Matheran and its surroundings in one go. The point also has many interesting features such as a temple dedicated to Lord Ganesh, a rock formation that resembles an elephant’s head, and even a waterfall!

As soon as you reach this viewpoint, make sure you stop by at one of its picnic spots where you can enjoy some food or just relax on your own. You might also want to visit nearby caves with their beautiful paintings inside them (if they are open).

Discover the Echo Point

If you are a music lover, Echo Point is the place to go. It is known as one of the best places to listen to your echo and shout out loud. This spot offers an amazing natural acoustics that makes it ideal for singing and listening, making it your perfect weekend outing destination in Matheran!

Visit the Panorama Point

The Panorama Point:

This viewpoint offers a 360-degree view of the entire Matheran town and the surrounding hills. It's located at about 1 km from Matheran's main road, where you can easily hire an autorickshaw or taxi to take you there.

The panoramic view from here is spectacular, with views of all four sides of Matheran (the hillside, river valley and forested areas) as well as glimpses into nearby villages such as Khandala and Viravarti. Many tourists flock here during weekends because they want to see this beautiful place in its full glory before heading back home on Monday morning!

One of the most popular ways to explore the Western Ghats is by train. The Neral-Matheran Toy Train runs from Matheran to Lonavala, covering a distance of 30 km. The ride takes approximately 15 minutes and covers some beautiful scenery along the way.

A ticket costs Rs 50 per person and can be purchased at any station on this route.

Visit the Shivaji's Ladder

Matheran, a small town in Maharashtra, is well-known for its diverse wildlife and spectacular views. One of the most popular tourist attractions in Matheran is the Shivaji's Ladder.

This historic site offers stunning views of the surrounding hills and is a great spot for photography enthusiasts. The ladder was built by Shahu Maharaj (the king) during his reign over Thane district around 1640s when he defeated Portuguese armies led by Afonso de Albuquerque near Panvel (now part of Mumbai).

The ladder consists of four steps which form an inverted “V” shape with each step being about 10 meters long with an additional 5 meters drop from top to bottom so that it can be climbed comfortably by one person at a time:
