Mokokchung is a town in Nagaland, India. It is located in the southern part of the state and lies on National Highway 49. Mokokchung has been a trade hub for centuries; it was once called "Little Calcutta" because of its wealth and busy marketplaces. The town is also known for being at the centre of many important events in Naga history including the first uprising against British rule in 1891, World War II bombings and post-independence movements like
MECHEMO (the Naga Students' Federation). There are several festivals held throughout the year which showcase different aspects of Mokokchung's culture such as traditional sports competitions or traditional foods made with local ingredients like ginger tea or rice wine called "moatsu".
Mokokchung is a town in Nagaland, India. It is the district headquarters of Mokokchung District in the state of Nagaland.
It was formerly known as "Maram", but this name was taken by another village nearby (more correctly called Maram Khel). The present name derives from two words: moko means 'water' and kochi means 'of'. The word moko means 'water' because it flows through this village and gives life to people who live here; while kochi literally translates into "of".
The Mokokchung Ao Festival is an annual event held in the city of Mokokchung. The festival was first established in 1979, and it has been celebrated annually since then. It celebrates the importance of this traditional festival and its significance to local communities as well as state and national levels.
The main activities during this period include:
Traditional games like tug-of-war, which are played with long sticks;
Archery competitions;
Archery tournaments with cash prizes awarded by Departmental Government officials on behalf of their respective districts;
Traditional dances performed by men wearing colourful costumes;
The Moatsu Festival is a harvest festival held in mid-October. It is celebrated to celebrate the end of the harvest season, and it marks an important transition from summer to winter.
The festival includes traditional games such as egg throwing, snake catching and rope pulling (the last two being popular among children). The festival also includes performances by local artists who dress up as gods or animals for entertainment purposes.
Tsungremong is a harvest festival. It is held in the first week of November, and it celebrates the end of farming season. This religious festival is celebrated with prayers and offerings to God, who was believed to have given them good crops this year. The people also give gifts to each other as well as receive them from others during this time."

Mokokchung Mini Hornbill Festival
This festival is held on the third Friday of every December. It celebrates Nagaland's indigenous culture, and it is a sign that winter is slowing down. The festival includes cultural performances and dances, traditional games, crafts and craftsmen's exhibitions. In addition to this there are food stalls set up for visitors to enjoy themselves while they watch all these things take place. There will also be a lot of fun activities for children including face painting, mini art exhibits by local artists as well as music performances from local musicians throughout the day!
Mokokchung District Sports Association Games: The Mokokchung District Sports Association is an organization that provides information on this sports event that draws participants from across the district.

Sports and activities involved: Football, Basketball, Volleyball and Kabaddi (Indian games)
Number of participants expected: Around 2,500 people are expected to attend this event. Prizes will be awarded based on merit assessment by participating teams and individuals to encourage further participation in these events by students and local communities alike.
In the first week of November, Literary Fest Mokokchung will be organized to celebrate the literary culture. The event is being held at Mokokchung College Auditorium from 10th to 15th November 2018.
The festival will feature various sessions and workshops related to literature and its appreciation by students, teachers, writers and readers from all over India as well as abroad. It also aims at promoting youth participation in writing through contests such as poetry slam or short story competitions before going on stage for their performance which would be judged by eminent personalities like Dr Gopi Chand Kakar etc., along with other jury members like Dr Subhash Gupta (Director), Dr Deepika (Head Mistress) etc., who are experts in their fields respectively; thus providing opportunities for participants who otherwise could not participate due to financial constraints etc..
The Mokokchung Marathon is a half marathon race that takes place in March every year. The first edition was held in 2016 and it was followed by two other competitions since then.
The route of this annual event has varied from year to year but it usually starts from Bandar Baru, passing through Mokokchung town and finishing at Jatinga Hilltop Park where you can view the scenic view of Mt. Pando, which is located near Mokokchung Town.
Hornbill Motor Rally is the largest off-road rally in the region. It has been running since 2005 and is generally held on a single day in March or April. The event consists of four stages, each one covering different terrain and featuring unique challenges.
The rally begins with an overnight bus journey to Kohima, where participants stay at hotels and enjoy cultural activities before setting out for Mokokchung town early next morning on their first stage via Dauki (a village near Mokokchung). On this leg participants will see some challenging terrain as they traverse through hills with deep valleys between them; however, it will also be an opportunity for them to learn more about this beautiful region from those who have lived here all their lives! At noon both teams meet back up again at Dingkoi hotel before heading towards their final destination - Siang River Bridge - which takes about 2 hours by road but could take longer due to traffic jams caused by other vehicles trying not only pass through but also overtake you if possible without much care taken towards safety measures such as lights etcetera."
The Indigenous Food Festival is an annual event that aims to celebrate the diverse culinary traditions of Nagaland. It takes place at Imphal, the capital city of Manipur, and features a wide range of cuisines from all over India. The festival also features food stalls from various regions in India, including Sikkim, Assam and West Bengal.
The festival attracts thousands of visitors every year who come for its cultural experience as well as its vast array of delicious foods on display. Visitors can sample some traditional dishes like kachri bhaji (a typical dish from Assam), masala dosa (made from urad dal flour), matse-khas (a type of bread made with wheat flour) or any other traditional delicacy they wish to try out!
The fair is organised by the Mokokchung District Administration in association with All India Handicrafts Emporium, a state-owned organization. The fair will showcase the unique and beautiful handicrafts produced in the region.
The handicrafts are made by local artisans, who use natural materials such as bamboo, cotton and mud to create their designs. Handmade items are also sold at this event which helps them earn money for their families’ needs.
Hornbill International Music Festival
The Hornbill International Music Festival is one of the biggest music festivals in Mokokchung. It is held annually and attracts thousands of people from all over India as well as neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar. The festival is organized by Chalta Vini Production Company which has been organizing this event since 2010. The main aim of this festival is to promote ethnic culture through music which includes folk songs from different regions.
The acts that perform at this event include Bollywood singers such as Sonu Nigam, Kailash Kher etc., Classical singers like Hariharan etc., Folk artists like Elli Nissanka etc., Metal bands like Aalaya Bandura (Bandura) etc., Jazz artists like Satish Kumar/Vikas Mahanti/Ashish Bose ...
The Youth Festival is a festival that celebrates the youth of all ages. It's a time to come together and learn about all that we have in common, whether it's our differences or our similarities. The festival is for people of all genders, backgrounds and religions!
The Hornbill Literature Festival is held in December and aims to promote Naga literature. It is also a great opportunity to meet and interact with other writers, especially those from Mokokchung town.
The festival is organized by the Mokokchung District Sports Association (MDSA).
Christmas is a time to celebrate. It's a time for family, friends and charity. The Mokokchung Christmas Festival offers an opportunity to explore the unique Christmas traditions of Mokokchung, including caroling and special foods.
The destination of this year’s festival will be at Chinde Secondary School at 1pm on Saturday 12th December 2018 (December 22nd).
