The temple was built by the Pallavas during their rule over Tiruvannamalai; later it was renovated by Chola kings who ruled from Thanjavur (south). Today's structure dates back from that period but there are some modifications made since then as well as additions made later on by Rajagopala Pandya kings who ruled from Madurai before shifting their capital here and establishing themselves as rulers over all of Tamil Nadu during 12th century CE until 14th century CE when they were defeated by Muslims led by Malik Kafur who invaded India after defeating Mongols at Khwarizmian invasion fleet reached India via sea route along west coast which resulted in loss of many settlements along coastal areas including Delhi where Tughlaq dynasty took control over entire country except Delhi because Mongols had already taken over rest part firstly followed by Firuz Shah Tughlaq towards east coast after defeating Mongols led by Genghis Khan near end of 13th century AD
