Upcoming Events & Festivals in Thrissur

Thrissur is a city in the state of Kerala in India. The city is located about 100 km from Kochi and is popular for its temple festival, Pooram. Thrissur has also been known as "The City of Palaces" because of its many royal mansions and palatial buildings that were built by various rulers over the centuries.

Thrissur Pooram

Thrissur Pooram is the most important festival in Kerala. It is a celebration of the goddess Gowri and it is celebrated for ten days during the month of March/April. The main events in this festival include:

Pookkalam - Procession that includes elephants, horses, chariots and much more

Aattakatha - Performance of plays based on ancient myths and legends

Ulsavam - Dance performances by men's groups such as Asom Gana Sangam (Association of Men) and Kuthiravani (Dance Troupe). Women's groups such as Padayottam Kala Samithi also perform during this time. This colorful display lasts throughout the night until sunrise!

Pulikali

Pulikali is a traditional dance form of Kerala. It is performed by both men and women during the Pooram festival, which occurs during the first ten days of Thulam month (mid-April). The dance consists of lively steps accompanied by drums and cymbals; it also incorporates heavy use of gestures, facial expressions and body language.

The Pulikali performances are usually held at the Thrissur Pooram grounds in front of Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple where they are performed daily from 6pm till midnight during this period. The performance begins with a flag raising ceremony followed by teaming up with other dancers wearing colorful costumes while performing various activities such as head movements or making hand gestures while moving across different parts or even waving fans made out of grasses over their heads!

Vishu

Vishu is a festival celebrated in the state of Kerala to mark the beginning of spring season. This festival is observed for 15 days and it starts on the first day of Medam (April-May), which is also known as Vaikasi Visakam or "New Moon Day".

The most important event during this period is Thrissur Pooram, which takes place at Mattancherry Palace every year on April 14th or 15th depending upon when you're reading this article. Kudamattam

Kudamattam is a traditional dance form from Thrissur, Kerala. It is performed by women and is part of the Pooram Festival in Thrissur. The dance form is based on three steps:

Salamba - A move where one leg moves forward while the other leg moves backward

Nedungu - An aerial leap where both legs are straightened out behind you with your knees bent at 90 degrees

Onam

Navaratri

Navaratri is a festival celebrated by Hindus in India, Nepal and Bangladesh. It is observed in the Hindu month of Ashvin (September–October). The festival lasts for nine days and marks the return of Lord Vishnu to earth after staying dormant for more than 12 years.

The day-long festivities begin on Vijaya Dashami with bathing at dawn, followed by one large meal during which guests are expected to eat only vegetarian food. This celebration ends with all-night carol singing on Ashokastami, or Sankranti as it's also known in Kerala state. This can take place either indoors or outdoors depending on where you choose to hold your party – do note that some hotels may not allow alcohol consumption at their premises during Navaratri!
