The celebrations begin with the lighting of lamps at the first house on New Year’s Day (1st January). A grand ceremony takes place at Padmanabhapuram Palace where thousands of people gather to watch traditional dance performances by various ethnic communities such as Syrian Christians, Syrians Jews etc..

The famous “Kochi Kalari” or “Cochin Kalari” dance form originates from this region and has been part of the Kochi Carnival since its inception in 1991.

Cochin International Film Festival

Nehru Trophy Boat Race

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is a boat race held in Kochi, Kerala, India. It is the second most prestigious event after the International Indian Snooker Championship. The race was inaugurated by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on November 8th 1959 and since then it has been organized annually on the second Saturday of November every year.

The race usually takes place on rivers like Bharathapuzha or Vembanadu at Alappuzha Marina near Edakochi Island which was officially designated as an international centre for river sports by UNESCO during its Asia-Pacific meeting held in March 2000.[1][2]

Cochin International Boat Show is a boat show held in Kochi, Kerala. It is the largest boat show in Kerala and takes place every year at the Cochin Port Trust (COPT) Complex. The event has been organized since 2002 and attracts a large number of visitors from all over India as well as abroad.

The organizers have recently announced that they will be conducting their next edition of this event from February 26th to March 2nd 2020 with an estimated 10 lakh visitors expected during those three days alone!

The festival was first organised in 1996 and has been held every year since then except for 2006 and 2008 when it was cancelled due to financial constraints faced by the Akademi. The venue of the event changes every year but usually takes place at various venues around Kochi city including Kaloor Arts Centre & Pariyaram Art Gallery (Kaloor) or Aluva Town Hall (Aluva).

Kochi Durga Puja is a Hindu festival celebrated in the Malabar region of south-western India. It is held during the month of August or September, and celebrates the victory of good over evil.

The festival begins with prayers to Goddess Durga on Shashthi Tithi (the sixth day) and concludes with worship on Kartik Poornima (the tenth day).

There are many festivals in Kochi, and it’s always worth taking some time to explore them. We recommend that you visit the Cochin Carnival during the festival season, which runs from early November until March (usually a few days before Christmas). This event is one of the largest celebrations in India and attracts thousands of people every year. If you have time during this period, also check out Nehru Trophy Boat Race which takes place every year on December 1-2 near Aluva Lake (about an hour away from Kochi). It is one of the biggest sporting events in Kerala where teams compete for points by racing around a course full of obstacles like rocks, mud pools and waterfalls - there are even live bands playing throughout!
